Dec 23 : Indian Catholic Youth Movement Central Council, Diocese of Mangalore in collaboration with St Aloysius college (Autonomous) Mangalore, Centre for Social Concern, CODP Sparsha Campaign Against Cancer, Mercy Beauty Academy at St Aloysius College Mangalore organised Beautiful Lengths (Hair Donation Drive) on Tuesday, 21st December 2021 at Eric Mathias Hall, St Aloysius College. 

Jennifer Mascarenhas, Dean, extension services, St Aloysius College welcomed the gathering, The Rector of St Aloysius College, Fr Melwyn Pinto SJ, addressed the gathering and said, ”We should actually honour the donors who have come forward to donate their hair for those who are suffering from cancer.” The Principal of St Aloysius College, Rev Dr Praveen  Martis SJ said that, ”This is a good initiative. We always need to give something to those who are in need and this is the best way to help someone who is suffering”.

Irene Pinto, a 60 year old hair donor from Padavinangady shared her experience saying that she had seen her sister in hospital suffering from cancer and was worried about hair fall. Hence, she decided to donate her hair. “I grew my hair and donated it” she said. A student of 2nd year BA named Tapasvi from St Aloysius said, “This was in my mind for a long time. I started growing my hair for this day. I feel really happy to donate my hair for cancer patients.” Another 2nd year student of Masters named Aishwaraya  said, “Being a biology student, I read about cancer where they will have hair fall. So I decided to donate my hair to cancer patients.”

Fr Melwyn Pinto SJ, Rector, Dr Praveen Martis SJ, Principal of St Aloysius College, Lenet Gonsalves, programme manager, CODP, Fr Ashwin Cardoza, director, ICYM Mangalore diocese, CODP programme coordinator Shilpa, Jaison Lawrence Crasta ,President of ICYM Mangalore diocese, Veena D’Souza from Mercy Beauty Academy and oncologist Dr Karthik were the dignitaries present. Terrence Levy Crasta, Vice-President ICYM Karnataka Region, Sapna Gonsalves, Lady Vice-President ICYM Mangalore Diocese, Anil Sequeira ,Treasurer, Elsita Trincy Cardoza, Public Relations Officer ICYM, Viola Reshma Lewis, Regional Representative, Jaison Pereira Shirthady, Former President ICYM Karnataka Region were also present.

About 50 donors aged between 12 to 70 donated their hair in Beautiful Lengths Hair Donation Drive. Ms Philomena Fernandes, Coordinator of Centre for Social Concern, proposed the vote of thanks and Mazel Fernandes compered the event. Jaison Lawrence Crasta, President, Blairil Vishma D’Cunha, General Secretary and Sapna Gonsalves, Lady Vice  President of ICYM Mangalore Diocese coordinated this event.

Mercy Beauty Academy team commenced the event by beginning the Drive.

All the donors were awarded with a certificate for their generous contribution. It was a memorable event for everyone to be of service to those in need.
